PPECB: Product Inspection Services

The PPECB, mandated by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), has been delivering end-point inspection services on perishable products destined for export since 1991. Inspectors, stationed across South Africa, are suitably qualified and extensively trained to deliver consistent quality inspection services on over 200 product types at more than 1 500 locations.

Products approved for export carry the passed for export stamp, regarded as a symbol of quality assurance to clients and consumers around the world. As South Africa’s official certification agency for perishable export products, the PPECB‘s impartial and independent services significantly reduces risks for producers and exporters.

The presence of the PPECB in the export industry is furthermore enhanced by its recognition as an approved third country under the European Commission Regulation 543 of 2011. This agreement recognizes the South African inspection systems as equivalent to that of the EU inspection bodies and therefore ensures less frequent checks at the port of import into the EU.

Importers & Buyers

PPECB approved produce is recognised by importers world-wide as meeting the required food safety and quality standards.

The PPECB is a public entity, constituted and mandated in terms of the Perishable Products Export Control Act (PPEC Act), No 9, of 1983 to perform cold chain services. The PPECB also delivers inspection and food safety services assigned by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) under the Agricultural Products Standards Act, No. 119 of 1990.

Through our inspection services we ensure all products meet the minimum food safety and quality requirements of importing countries and further ensure quality is maintained through proper cold chain management until the produce reaches its destination.

Exporters

Our mission is to make you a preferred supplier of perishable products world-wide.

All South African exporters of perishable produce are required to be registered with the PPECB.

The PPECB‘s range of services, which includes product inspections, supervision during the loading of cargo and en-route temperature management, provides assurance to exporters that their produce meets the minimum export standards and requirements of the importing country.

The PPECB‘s product inspection services ensures quality, phytosanitary and marking requirements of produce intended for export are met. Furthermore, the presence of the PPECB in the export industry is enhanced by its recognition as an approved third country under the European Commission Regulation 543 of 2011. This agreement recognises the South African quality inspection systems as equivalent to that of the EU inspection bodies and therefore ensures less frequent checks at the port of import into the EU.

The PPECB‘s services for exporters continues during loading and transportation. During loading the PPECB confirms the temperature of the product, inspects the physical condition of the pallets and ensures the container is set to the optimum carrying temperature for the specified product. When cargo is loaded onto the specified vessels the temperature of the vessel is determined at various points of the journey to ensure the optimum temperature is maintained.

Producers & Pack Houses

Our passion for quality helps you ensure product excellence

As the mandated certification agency for perishable products intended for export, all producers and pack houses are required to register with the PPECB. Registration requires that the producer or pack house first obtains a valid FBO (Food Business Operator) code from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Once an FBO code has been obtained the producer or pack house can register with the PPECB.

The PPECB provides a diverse range of services to registered pack houses and producers which ensures they meet relevant standards relating to regulated agricultural food products intended for export. These services include Food Safety Audits, food safety testing services and product inspections.

The PPECB‘s Food Safety Audits focus on all systems and processes within the production and packing chain such as traceability, worker hygiene and plant protection methods amongst others. Furthermore, the PPECB‘s laboratory, an ISO 17025 accredited testing facility, which services products intended for both local and international markets, provides vital food safety testing services such as mycotoxin analysis, fats analysis, compositional dairy testing and maximum residue level (MRL) testing of pesticides in a myriad of matrices.

The PPECB‘s product inspection services are performed by inspectors, stationed across South Africa, who deliver consistent quality inspections on over 200 product types to ensure the produce complies with minimum export standards. This includes but is not limited to quality and phytosanitary aspects as well as marking requirements.
